What is with Japanese Anime and mothers?

How you ever notice how many anime have the element of mothers in them? Take the most recent Anime, FF7: Advent Children for example. A tale of a filial child by the name of Sephiroth, seeking to reunite with his mother. Along came Cloud, who ruined everything.

Lets go back a year. Appleseed 2004. THE Legendary fighter, Deunan. Ass-kicking, gun throttling, mecha piloting Deunan. And what does she do when she is in trouble and need help with the last letter of the save-the-world password? She cries: “mommmmmy!!!!!”

What about the 2001 adaptation of the PS game, Zone of the Enders? Remember the girly, act cute and pink colored mecha call Dolores-I? And who was the one to program her in such a revolting fashion? The mother in the family of course!

Lets go even further back. Remember Neon Genesis Evangelion? The mother of all motherly anime! (Pun intended ^_^) What have sissy Shinji, arrogant Asuka, and robotic Rei have in common (other than the fact that they all need psychiatrist help)? They all lost their mother at a young age, and are piloting a biological weapon which contain the soul of their mother. Even Ritsuko have issues with her mother and have to communicate with her by talking to laptops and machineries.

Still not convinced? Lets try one last example – Sailormoon. No hint of any mothers or motherly stuff in sailormoon? Think carefully… who is the mother of Chibi-usa? Moonie herself of course!

Okay… maybe the last example wasn’t a good one. But for those who have watched these Animes, I am sure you understand what I am pointing at. So what is with Japanese animators and mothers? I think they lack MOTHERLY LOVE!!
